Great stock picks still blow up portfolios when size is wrong. Fixed risk budgets and stop processes matter more than entry price over a decade.
Why sizing is the permanent problem
Two investors can own the same stock with opposite outcomes: one allocates 3%, the other 25%. Drawdowns that are manageable at 3% become career-ending at 25%.
Practical rules that age well
- Single-name cap: Many disciplined investors limit one non-index stock to 5-10% of equity capital unless it is a deliberate concentration strategy with written exit rules.
- Theme cap: Thematic baskets (capex, NBFC, SME) might each stay within a band you define in advance.
- Liquidity test: Can you exit half the position in two days without moving the price excessively?
- Drawdown response: Pre-commit: at -15% from cost, review thesis; at -25%, require new evidence to add, not average blindly.
Quant-oriented baskets publish explicit exit rules so subscribers are not guessing in real time. Example: Alpha Quant Basket.
